스즈미야 하루히의 소실, 작가 후기에서 발췌
작품 내의 나가토 유키라는 존재의 모티프라고 생각하는 에피소드가 있어서 번역합니다. 읽고 굉장히 느낌이 좋았습니다. 작가가 나가토에게 애정을 가질만 하군요. (끄덕끄덕)
고교시절, 나는 짧은 기간이지만 문예부에 소속해있었다. 다른 부활동에 주력하고 있었기 때문에 부실에 가는 것은 일주일에 한 번 정도였지만, 원래 모임이 일주일에 한 번정도 밖에 없었다. 왜냐하면 부원이 나보다 한 학년 위의 여자선배 혼자 뿐이었기 때문이다. 내가 처음으로 문을 두드렸을 때, 안경을 쓴 이지적인 얼굴의 그녀가 유일한 부원에, 부장에, 선배였다. 그 선배와 무슨 이야기를 했었는지, 무슨 화제로 이야기를 했는지 기억에 남아있지 않다. 어쩌면 아무 말도 하지 않았을 지도 모른다.
내가 입부하고 얼마 뒤, 둘이서 회지를 만들었다. 내가 무엇을 썼었는지 별로 기억하고 싶지 않다. 소설은 아니었다. 표지는 내가 그렸다. 이것도 별로 기억하고 싶은 일이 아니다. 두 명이서는 아무리해도 분량을 맞출 수 없었기 때문에, 그녀는 친구들에게 부탁해서 글을 써달라고 했었다. 별로 상관은 없지만 그 사람들 중 한 명의 이름이 너무나 특이해서 지금도 기억하고 있다.
3학년이 되니 선배는 부활에서 은퇴하고 수험공부에 전념하게 되었다. 동시에 부에 신입부원이 5명 정도 들어왔다. 왜 그렇게 갑자기 늘어났는지는 모르겠다. 다른 부활동 쪽이 압도적으로 재미있었던 나 역시 곧 문예부에 가지 않게되었다.
그 후 졸업식 날, 선배와 만났다. 거기서 무슨 이야기를 했는지도 기억에 남아있지 않다. 아마도 아무 영양가도 없는 이야기를 하다가 선배가 걸어가는 뒷모습을 보고 있었지 않았을까.
그 선배의 이름도 기억이 나지 않는다. 분명 그 선배도 내 이름을 기억하지 못하겠지. 하지만 그 때 그 부실에, 누군가가 있었다는 것은 그녀도 기억하고 있지 않을까.. 라고 생각한다.
내가 그녀를 기억하는 것과 같이 말이다.
